Why Sorsa Mostly Uses Lab-Grown Diamonds
The short answer: they're real diamonds. The longer answer is worth reading.
When I was building Sorsa, one of the first decisions I made was about diamonds. Not which cut, not which size — but where they come from and what that means.
The majority of the diamonds we use are lab-grown. Occasionally, for certain pieces, we work with natural stones — but lab-grown is our default, and here's why.
They Are Real Diamonds. Full Stop.
A lab-grown diamond is not a fake. It is not a simulant. It is chemically, physically and optically identical to a diamond pulled from the ground — same carbon structure, same hardness, same fire when it catches the light.
The only difference is how it was created. A mined diamond forms over billions of years under extreme heat and pressure inside the earth. A lab-grown diamond replicates that exact environment in a controlled setting, in a matter of weeks.
That's it. Same diamond. Different story.
What They're Not
People often confuse lab-grown diamonds with cubic zirconia or moissanite. They're not the same thing.
CZ and moissanite are simulants — different materials entirely, designed to look like diamonds. A lab-grown diamond doesn't imitate anything. It is a diamond, down to its molecular structure.
Why It Matters to Me
For most of our pieces, that means lab-grown diamonds. I wanted to build a brand with a clear conscience about its materials. With a mined diamond, the supply chain is long, opaque, and — even with certification — not always easy to trace. With a lab-grown stone, I know exactly where it came from.
That transparency matters. Not in a preachy way — but when you're making something designed to last a lifetime, the story behind it should hold up too.
There's also a lighter environmental footprint. No land disturbed, no communities displaced, no vast infrastructure required. It's not a perfect solution (energy consumption in production is still a real consideration, and the industry is actively working on it), but it's a significantly better one.
The Price Point Is a Bonus, Not the Point
Lab-grown diamonds typically cost 60–85% less than a mined equivalent of the same quality. That gap has grown considerably over the last few years as production has scaled.
For Sorsa, this means I can use genuinely excellent stones — well-cut, high clarity, beautiful — without the price ballooning. You're paying for the craftsmanship and the design, not for the geological accident of where a stone happened to form.
The Questions I Get Asked Most
Are they graded the same way? Yes. Lab-grown diamonds are graded by the same gemological laboratories (GIA, IGI) using the same 4C criteria: cut, colour, clarity, carat.
Will they hold their value? Honestly? Probably not at the same rate as a top-tier mined diamond. But very few mined diamonds actually hold their value well either — that's largely a myth. If you're buying jewellery as an investment, this probably isn't the right conversation. If you're buying it because you love it and want to wear it, lab-grown is a smart, beautiful choice.
Can you tell the difference? No. Not visually, not physically. Even a trained gemologist can't distinguish one from the other without specialist equipment.
The diamonds in every Sorsa piece are real. They're bright, they're well-cut, and they come with a story I'm proud to tell.
